Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance Bicycle Emergency Response Team.
Commonly known as “B.E.R.T.” BERT is comprised of two Giant Bicycles specially designed and equipped for EMS First Response in circumstances such as parades, 5K runs, races etc. The units are identified as 7-16-1 and 7-16-2.
B.E.R.T. riders are Emergency Medical Technicians of all levels who undergo a set standard of training requirements as well as demonstrations on the bicycles fully loaded in simulated conditions of heavy crowds, narrow spaces, curb mounting, emergency braking, as well as responding to a call when the situation demands it. Upon successful completion of the B.E.R.T. training, certificates are issued and these members are on a qualified list to operate the two units during the necessary times.
B.E.R.T. can be utilized anywhere, each chiefs vehicle as well as first responder vehicles are all equipped with receivers to transport the two units. In addition, the two units have their response trailer which is at the Ambulance Headquarters. When deemed necessary, the Bike Units are checked to ensure all necessary medical equipment is in date and available, and with their helmets on, the riders roll out.
